Mothers are supposed to love their children unconditionally, but what if they can’t? “Your own mother doesn’t love you—what makes you think anyone else will?” These words haunted the author and affected every decision she made. If she wasn’t good enough for her mother’s love, what was she worthy of? In The Monster That Ate My Mommy, Jessica Aiken-Hall takes the reader on her quest to find love and uncover the root of her suffering. In this courageous memoir, we learn the importance of love and belonging, and the price paid when it’s out of reach. “This is one of the most moving and brave memoirs I have ever read—on par with The Liar’s Club (Mary Karr) and The Glass Castle (Jeannette Walls). I was sucked in from the first sentence and remained riveted throughout. Aiken-Hall’s raw exploration and recounting of highly traumatic life events is tempered with the gentleness of hope and the strength of perseverance. This is a book of extreme importance in the canon of women’s memoir. Read it for the compelling story of survival: savor it for its lessons of grace and resilience.” —Sarah Felix Burns author of Jackfish, The Vanishing Village

Inspiring!

An inspiring testament to the resiliency of the human spirit! Without the author's explicit sharing of intimate details of the horrifying effects on her of both "love withheld" and "love given and abused", we could not really put ourself in her shoes - which this book accomplishes with excellence. From the first pages you will find yourself rooting for "our heroine", alas, much to no avail through the majority of the book. With respect to the author's purpose for the ending's effect, I will only say that the last part of the book contains lessons for us all. NOTE: This should be mandatory reading for anyone out there seriously questioning whether or not they have what it takes to be a parent!

An incredible read!

This memoir absolutely broke my heart! Some of this was triggering so be warned. I was in tears throughout the whole book. The trials and pain this author went through is just unbelievable to me. I honestly couldn't put this book down even though my heart was begging me to because it was very difficult to read. No one should have to go through what this author went through. This is a book I think everyone should read at least one time in their life. It was sad, and heartbreaking, and pitiful and absolutely beautiful to see how successful she became. She has got an amazing story and I'm so glad she decided to share it with us all. Thank you so much Jessica Aiken-Hall!

Must-Read for Anyone in the Human Services Field

I read this entire book in one evening because I could not put it down. The accounts of the author give the reader an insight of the mindset that can develop when one's life is continuous chaos and abuse from infancy to adulthood. The story is compelling not only because of the author's extraordinary suffering and resilience but because of her honest, wistful, and engaging writing voice. You feel her vulnerability and strength in each chapter. I think this book is a "must read" for anyone in the Human Services field. It is a truly a book that makes you feel changed after you have read it.

A must read!

I loved this book! Everyone can learn from this memoir whether you are a victim, abuser, bystander, or someone who has never known of nor dealt with an abusive situation. My heart goes out to the author as I am reminded that we think we know people but we really don't know what goes on when we're not there to see. This book had me in tears!

Must read for those who like memoirs!

Well written story of the author's journey through a difficult childhood and adult life. From the beginning to the end, you never stop rooting for the small child to find the validation she needs. Jessica draws the reader into her story and makes you laugh, cry, and hope for a happy ending. Excellent book!

Heartbreaking but heart mending

There are so many words flying through my head... Thank you Jessica for putting your life into words and sharing with everyone...

This is a touchingly honest portrait of how it is ...

This is a touchingly honest portrait of how it is to live in a family with incest. While heartbreaking and difficult at times, the insight and hope leaves you feeling that healing is possible.

Being Petty doesn't solve the issues in life!!

I truly thought she addressed all the issues of her life in an honest heartfelt way!!
